  • Facilitating Discussion of Transgender Issues: A Primer
    This PowerPoint Presentation by Dr. Gary Mallon, DSW, Director of the NRCPFC, provides information on strategies that are useful in creating an environment conducive to discussion of transgender issues with adolescents. It addresses the following topics: Active demonstration of transgender awareness and sensitivity; routinely screening for gender concerns; dilemmas in diagnosis of gender concerns in adolescents; and, conducting a detailed trans-inclusive psychosocial evaluation.   • Representing Transgender Youth: Learning from Mae’s Journey
    This article from ABA Child Law Practice (see p. 169-174) explores the efforts that made a difference for a transgender youth during her journey through the child welfare system, including advocacy tips and best practices for legal practitioners when working with transgender youth. The rights of transgender youth in foster care, placement, medical and therapeutic services, and school services are reviewed. Sections on “Understanding Terms” and “Building Relationships with Transgender Youth” are also included. (2011)
  • A Place of Respect: A Guide for Group Care Facilities Serving Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Youth
    This guide from the National Center for Lesbian Rights and the Sylvia Rivera Law Project offers group care facilities with information and tools to provide transgender and gender non-conforming young people with appropriate and informed care. It also describes laws requiring facilities to protect these youth from harassment and abuse, to provide them with appropriate medical care, and to treat them fairly. This publication helps staff understand the experiences and concerns of transgender and gender non-conforming youth, and explains how staff members can respond to these youths’ safety, programmatic, and health care needs in an informed and effective manner that meets facilities’ legal obligations. Finally, it provides administrators with a model policy and comprehensive practice guidelines to help keep transgender and gender non-conforming youth safe, prevent programmatic disruptions, and promote respectful and supportive environments for all youth.     The Gender Identity Project of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, & Transgender Community Center in New York City works to foster the healthy development of transgender and gender non-conforming people, partners, family and community. The GIP website offers a glossary of transgender-specific terminology, as well as Transgender Basics, a 20 minute educational film on the concepts of gender and transgender people.
